Heya there, so I’m Rory, I’m 22 years young and from the fine county of Tipperary. I’m your Welfare Officer on the Students’ Union. I deal with all your non-academic issues; so stuff like sexual health, mental health, accommodation and financial issues being just some of what I deal with. I’m a listening, referral and 100% confidential service. No problem is too small. It’s my job on the union is to try and make your time here in UCC is as stress free as possible.
These years while you’re in college are going to be some of the best years of your life so enjoy them. So if you need a someone to talk to pop up my office, we’ll have a chat and I can tell you some of the various options available to you. Whether you’re feeling down and out, you’re having some issues with your landlord or you’re just finding it difficult to settle in; I’m here to help. It’s so important to get involved while you’re here in UCC. When I first came to Cork I didn’t get involved in much outside of going to my lectures. In second year I got involved in some societies, made some fantastic friends and the rest is as they say history. You’re all here to get your degree but you won’t be able to do that if you’re miserable and lonely. Make friends with everyone and engage in UCC life outside your academics. I work heavily with Kate, our Campaigns officer, to make sure we have events like SHAG week and Mental Health weeks as well as running information campaigns around issues affecting students.
As I said I’m here all year so don’t be afraid to gimme a shout. Email, call or text me and make the best of your time here because before you know it you’re out in the big bad world pretending to be an adult!
